Rainbow Fluorite, also known as Fluor Spar, is a stunning stone that displays an amazing range of colors. Some of the most beautiful pieces are found in Mexico, England, and China. However, Fluorite used to be mined in Southern Illinois in the United States. In fact, this was where my very first crystal digging experience took place.
When I was about 8 years old, I was visiting my grandparents over Spring break from school. Their home wasn’t far from a former Fluorite mining site at Cave in Rock, Illinois. My grandpa took me to search the mining “dump pile” for rocks with little bits of Fluorite on them. I was astonished to find gorgeous Fluorite crusts on some of the stones, ranging from purple to yellow. In fact, I still have one of the stones I found on that trip – and it’s one of my most treasured crystals (though it may not be considered conventionally beautiful).

More About Rainbow Fluorite:
Fluorite, once called the “home of the rainbow,” is a stone of amazing variety. First, there are the colors: green, purple, blue, yellow, which are often found in beautiful banded formations. Only tourmaline shows more color variation.
Fluorite also shows fluorescence (and yes, it is the source of that word) under ultraviolet light, and, in some forms, with heating. One form called chlorophane will even glow if you simply hold it in your hand!
The name “fluorite” comes from the Latin word for “flow,” because fluorite melts at fairly low temperatures. And because it’s so easy to melt, it has long been shaped into figurines, drinking vessels, and other useful items. The Romans thought fluorite cups made their wine taste better — probably because of the resin melted in to make the cup hold its form. The chemical composition of Fluorite is CaF2.

Cool write-up on Rainbow Fluorite, and great timing! My little niece was just asking me about one in her collection. I know it’s a popular favorite with stone carvers because it’s soft and has good cleavage. But I never heard about it’s being melted into shapes. With a melting point of over 2500 F, I would expect to lose a lot of the color. Very interesting. Both the jeweler and the glass blower in me are intrigued. This calls for further research. Thank you for the inspiration.
Do you know any special properties of the deep blue/green and purple Fluorite specimens from the Rogerley Mine in England? I have several crystals, and find their energy very soothing. The colors are intense, as is the photo fluorescence. It’s the strongest anxiety reducing fluorite I’ve ever come across.

Love ?this. It has so many properties! I feel really drawn to this crystal. Initially I thought it was because of the rainbow connection but on further reading I see it’s also associated with ? Hi Amber! Alongside conventional treatment and guidance from one’s physician- we do find opals to be a good energetic complement for this. But do feel free to use bloodstone if you’re feeling intuitively drawn to it!

I’m from Southern Illinois!! This is crazy, so I’ve recently started getting into crystals and I was listening to a podcast the other day about Amethyst and I remember back when my husband worked construction when we first got married 9 years ago he worked out near Cave in Rock and he would find these purple rocks and bring them home to me because my favorite color has always been purple. So while listening to that podcast I pulled them out thinking they were amethyst (I probably have like 30-50 of them) and was disappointed when I realized they were fluorite instead. I was bummed because I really wanted to make a necklace out of one of the bigger ones but decided not to because I thought they didn’t have any healing type property to them. I’m so glad I ran across this episode to learn that they do! It’s like I was meant to find you! Thank you so much!

I recently won a drawing to win a piece of Fluorite from my school, Crystal Vaults! (So the universe definitely wants me to have some!)

Hi Natalie, other stone pairings will depend on your intention. In the article, it mentioned the intention as “shed some light on your current situation”, black tourmaline can help you to view the world objectively with clear, rational thought and neutrality and blue apatite allows you to see what is truly real in the world and motivates you to be who you really are. Sor for this intention, these stones make sense. I recommend doing a quick search of crystals to combine with fluorite and you’ll find quite a few great combinations along with recommended uses for those combinations. All natural crystals have a crystalline arrangement, being cubic, monoclinic, triclinic etc

Hi Denise, it is ok as long as you feel good about it. Some people are very sensitive to the energies of crystals, others not so much. So as long as it doesn’t make you feel bad/weird, I don’t see why you can’t do it ?
My only concern would be that the crystals could damage each other if you mix tumbled and raw crystals in your dish.
