Hey crystal lovers! Today, I’m here with the amazing Cassie Uhl from Zenned Out Jewelry and Zenned Out Biz. I am so excited to be interviewing Cassie because when I found Zenned Out a few months ago, I absolutely fell in love with their jewelry, so I can’t wait to share her business story with you.
When I first found Cassie’s website, I placed an initial order for over $300.00 worth of jewelry. I kind of just went crazy because there are so many great designs. However, as I started exploring the Zenned Out site and reading through Cassie’s blog and saw her Zenned Out Biz site – I knew that I had to have her on the show. So, Cassie, welcome! Thank you so much for being here.
Cassie Uhl: Thank you! I’m really happy to be here.
Ashley: You know, I have to say, you are just such an inspiration with the work that you do.
For those listening who are not familiar with Zenned Out, would you mind telling us a little bit about your story and how you got started with this business?
Cassie: Yeah, of course! We started really small. Zenned Out Jewelry started as just a home-made, hand-made jewelry business in my home. At that time, I was teaching Arts in public schools full time. My husband and I moved to Arizona and I was just like, “You know what, I really feel like this is what I’m supposed to be doing.” I felt really called, and I felt like I was going to be able to make more of a difference being an entrepreneur than I was as a teacher.
Being a teacher is really hard. It just feels like your hands are tied all the time. Being an entrepreneur and running my own business, I just had so much freedom. I knew that I would be able to make a bigger impact that way. So, I really ran with it. The business grew quickly and before long, we moved the business out of the house into a spacious studio here in Tempe, Arizona.
Now, I have a small handful of employees. They’re all really amazing, quality women that work for me and help keep the business shining bright.
Over the years, we really expanded from just making jewelry. Now I’ve been able to really focus my energy on what I’m even more passionate about, which is bringing spiritual tools to people that are really accessible and easy to implement. I want these tools to make getting started spirituality not so scary, because I think it can be really overwhelming for some people.
Ashley: Yeah. I think that’s true. I really love that story so much. Thank you for sharing that with everyone. I just have to tell you how much I love that you shared that, because I do find that in the interviews that I’ve done with other spiritual women business owners, the theme of freedom is so common. The ability to make more of an impact and make a bigger difference in the world is such amazing fuel for an entrepreneurial spirit, so I just love that story.
Now I have to tell you, one thing that I love about Zenned Out Jewelry is that connection to spirit and this ability to create helpful tools for people. So, I’m just gonna tell a quick personal story…
One of the very first things that I saw on your site that really drew my attention is a little rose gold ring. I haven’t taken it off since the day it arrived. It has two little lotuses at the top and it says ‘breathe’ on the inside. So, I feel like that message is really just for me. Only I know it’s there. When I look down and see that ring on my finger, it’s such a reminder to be present in the moment. A reminder to take that deep breath, recenter myself, and get focused again. It has just made such a big impact having this little reminder. And so, even though sometimes the way we might think of jewelry is being inconsequential, it is actually so deeply meaningful and really personal.
What was it about the jewelry specifically that made you feel like it would be a good medium for this art that you are creating?
Cassie: You really hit the nail on the head with your story. That’s what it really was for me. When I started making jewelry, that’s what drew me to the hand-stamps metal work. I actually started off doing beadwork, but then I discovered hand-stamping, which is the primary method we use for all our jewelry (including that ring). It’s so meaningful because each letter is hand-stamped one at a time by hand. Not to mention, just the alchemy of creating things out of metal – it’s just so magical. It’s a really incredible process.
I had been feeling like I just wasn’t able to find the kinds of pieces that I wanted. I am a very spiritual person, and I just felt like a lot of the spiritual jewelry that was and still is on the market is very gaudy. So I wanted really tasteful jewelry that also felt really meaningful to me, but I couldn’t find it. I wasn’t after something that had big bold letters on it showing that I’m into crystals and spirit guides, you know?
I try to create really tasteful jewelry that’s very deeply personal and meaningful.
This is also why we offer custom jewelry too, because I think it’s important for people to be able to create pieces that are important no matter where you’re at in your journey.
Ashley: Yeah and for those of us that don’t have the skills or the tools to go and create this kind of thing on our own, you’re really doing this amazing service. I just love it so much.
Let me ask you this Cassie, because I’m really loving exploring the Zenned Out blog. I think I stayed up half the night one night, just reading all the different articles. You just have a breadth of knowledge to share on different spiritual topics, and a big part of that is definitely crystals.
I was wondering, what are some of your favorite ways to work with crystals personally? And what inspires you to use them in your jewelry as well?
Cassie: Oh man, that’s a great question. I just love so many things about crystals. I’ve always been drawn to them ever since I was young. I am a firm believer of having altars and secret spaces in my house and in my workplace. I love having specific crystals in specific secret spaces that mean different things or give me the energy that I want to have. So I always have crystals in different parts of the house for different purposes.
Also obviously wearing crystals is really important to me. We have our point crystal necklaces, which is one of our top sellers and also one of my favorites, because fortunately, I can own all of them. I can ask myself, “What do I feel like I need today?” For example, today I knew I was gonna be doing this podcast, so I’m wearing my sodalite point crystal to give myself some extra throat chakra love.
I’m huge on chakras and energy. I often coordinate crystals with where I feel like I need the most balancing in my chakra system.
Ashley: Yeah. That’s amazing. So I want to shift gears a little bit, because I wanna talk about another thing that I picked up on my initial little splurge on your site – and that was the Goddess Discovery book. This is actually the thing that led me to your site. If you haven’t seen the Goddess Discovery book yet, you must not be on Instagram. This thing is all over Instagram! I love it so much. it’s really unlike anything else that I’ve ever seen. It’s meant to be kind of taken apart and deconstructed and utilized as this really sacred tool.
Would you mind telling us a little bit about what’s included in this book and how you hope it can impact and transform the lives of the women that use it?
Cassie: Yeah, of course. I just love you talking about it because this book has brought me so much joy and it just made me so happy to see so many women using it. The Goddess Discovery book came about last year. It’s just one of those things where I was like, I have to make this right now and it happened really quickly. I mean, my designer and I made this book in two months. We had a lot of the work kind of already done because a lot of it is content that we have in our blog posts, but it was just one of those things where I was like, “This needs to be manifested now” and we did it. It was really amazing. It’s still really amazing.
The book includes eight different topics ranging from chakras, to crystals, runes, and sacred geometry. I really just wanted to give an overview of each of those topics. But more importantly, I wanted to give people tools to use so they can implement those tools easily and right away, because I think that’s where the disconnect happens. We buy books and read about spirituality and read about spiritual practices and read about these tools but then it’s like, “Okay, well what would I do? Or where do I get that?” I mean fortunately for me, I was in a big city in Phoenix and I can easily go to a metaphysical store. But a lot of people don’t have that, or it’s really overwhelming.
I just wanted to create a book that had all these introductory things in it. I wanted to give people the tools to dig into each topic and start utilizing them immediately.
Ashley: And it really is. It’s a guide for action takers. I mean, this is a phenomenal resource and like you said, it’s kind of like a metaphysical smorgasbord.
It’s full of everything, so you get to sample and try out each topic. For me, this is very exciting because I love the kind of thing that you can touch and feel and hold in your hand. I love to have that connection. I think that’s one of the reasons I love crystals so much. You’re really giving people a way to learn about something new and then, like you’ve said, really take action. Instead of just going “Okay, well now I have that knowledge” and never actually embodying what that means in terms of your spiritual practice.
The other thing that’s really cool about this book is that you can take the things you really resonate with and leave the things you don’t.
Also, I have to say that the artwork in the book is amazing. And the information in the book is amazing. We’ll definitely include a link to it here on the blog so that you’re welcome to go check it out for yourself. It’s super cool.
The other thing I learned about you from just visiting your site and reading your blogs is that you actually have two businesses that work together. So, your other half of your business is Zenned Out Biz, where you actually teach other spiritual entrepreneurs and heart centered healers and people like that to help create more alignment with their sacred business. Because obviously you’ve had a lot of success in your own business with Zenned Out Jewelry and now you’re teaching other people how to do the same.
So, do you have any words of wisdom or big take away messages? Anything that you’ve learned from your journey with your spiritual business?
Cassie: Yeah, definitely, because I mean, I’ve worked through every level of owning a business. I started at home and now I have employees, so I know what every phase is like. I’ve seen myself at my best and my worst in all of those phases. The most important thing that I’ve learned through all of it is that to be truly of service, you have to take care of yourself. Self-care has to be a priority. It took me a long time to learn that. I had a long time where I was working 11 or 12 hour days consistently, and not taking days off. But that’s just not how I wanted to live, and now I live in a way where I make sure that my daily meditation practice is solid. Self-care is really important, and my business thrives because of it.
Running a business can be super overwhelming. Sometimes it can seem like the last thing you want to do is to take time off to care for yourself and meditate. However, it’s actually the most important thing that you can do. It’s all about being in alignment and being of service.
When I’m not taking care of myself, I’m not in alignment. This means that I’m not truly being of service to anybody – including myself.
Ashley: Yeah, that’s so true. I can definitely agree with you there from personal experience. Those 12-hour work days, six days a week – they just don’t fly for very long. That’s what leads to burn out. So yeah, just finding a more balanced approach to your business is so important. Even if you have created a really spiritual business, it’s still a business. Therefore it’s going to come with all the ups and downs that a business comes with. But you have a choice to make with how you handle that.
I think you’re absolutely right that when you take time for self-care. You fill yourself up and then you’re able to put in more and give more. When your well is empty there’s nothing left to give. Then you’re out of alignment and you can’t be of service. I really thank you for sharing that lesson because overworking is something that many of us get sucked into. Often, before we even realize what’s happened.
On your Zenned Out Biz site, you have some great services to help other business owners, which I just adore.
You have things that most real business owners need, like an Etsy shop critique. You have answers to questions like, “Where am I missing out?” “What can I improve?” This kind of information is so invaluable. I love what you’re doing with both of your businesses. So, bravo! Congratulations.
Cassie: Thank you!
Ashley: And thank you so much for coming and spending some time with us today.
Cassie: Yeah, of course! I loved it.
Ashley: So, that was the amazing Cassie Uhl from Zenned Out Jewelry and Zenned Out Biz.
