Snowflake Obsidian contains tiny white clusters of cristobalite. The “snow” in this obsidian is actually crystals of Cristobalite, which is the same chemical substance as Quartz but with a different crystal structure. The Cristobalite spots resemble small white snowflakes or flowers on the backdrop of the Black Obsidian, creating a striking composition!

Snowflake Obsidian is about balance. If you’ve been going through an intense period of action; Snowflake Obsidian reminds you to allow yourself a period of rest. Take time to appreciate the balance that can be created in your life – even if just in small ways. If this stone comes to you it may indicate that you’ve been experiencing a time of cloudiness or darkness in your life that will soon part. This stone speaks in a very ancient language, so listen closely to what it’s trying to tell you. Snowflake Obsidian encourages ancestral connection and creates a touch point for remembrance and honoring of your ancestors.
How to Work with Snowflake Obsidian:
To honor ancestor spirits, anoint a black candle with cedar oil by rubbing a drop or two of oil over its surface (a cotton swab works well for this). Light the candle (in a fireproof container) and place it near a Snowflake Obsidian stone and a picture of your ancestor(s). Pick up the stone, and while gazing into the flame of the candle, ask them for any wisdom or knowledge that they’d like to impart, or for clarity about what is being asked of you at this time. Then, look for any meaningful signs, symbols, or messages that come through over the next few days.

Obsidian is the most abundant form of naturally occurring glass on Earth and is the result of volcanic lava cooling quickly. Technically, obsidian may have any composition, but most often, it’s a glass with inclusions of hematite and rhyolite.
Because Obsidian is easy to chip and forms a sharp point, it has been an invaluable material for toolmaking throughout history, thus contributing to the evolution of the human race. Moreover, many cultures also used it to make mirrors and figurines. In fact, one way archaeologists can trace the development of trade is by testing the composition of obsidian objects found along trade routes to find out where it originated, and thus how far it had traveled. Spiritually, Obsidian of all kinds has been used for ancestor work and journey work by both ancient and modern peoples. More recently, obsidian lore has made its way into popular culture as “dragon glass” in Game of Thrones, or as a “witch’s blade.”
It’s important to note that Obsidian breaks easily and forms sharp edges, so be careful you don’t get cut, and keep this in mind if children will handle it. Furthermore, when buying obsidian, be careful of sellers promoting obsidian in various bright colors; this material is usually fake.
