Why Won’t My Stones Work Anymore? Tips for Connecting to Crystal Energy

Have you ever found yourself asking, ‘Why don’t my stones work anymore?’
Why do your stones suddenly feel different than they used to? Here’s what I can tell you from my own experience… Just because your crystals didn’t “work” or felt different this time, it doesn’t mean they WON’T work for you again in the future. There are many things you can do to get your crystal connection back.
It could be that you were just feeling a bit drained and not really up to working with your crystals in the way you were trying to. Sometimes it’s necessary to take a little step back so that you can take time to recover your energy or be more present for the work you’re doing. Your crystals are still likely working behind the scenes to support you energetically even if you can’t sense them.
You may also experience times when you just don’t feel like working with your crystals. And this is OK!
Sometimes you just have to trust that there is a good reason why you’re not feeling called to work with them right now. Not being drawn to work with your stones can be a message from your inner guidance that it’s just not the right time.
So, when this happens, my advice is… take a step back.
Allow yourself some time to naturally get back into your crystal groove. Maybe start slow by adding a piece of crystal jewelry into your routine. Or, choose just 1 single stone to carry around in your pocket for a few days.
Just be in the flow of the universe. Don’t force it and your connection will rekindle over time.
Sometimes the universe asks us to take a break from things. This includes the things we love and that are important to us.
But…even after saying all of this, the MOST important thing when working with your crystals is that you listen to your own inner guidance.
That means if you feel like you should reconnect to your stones, but you’re just having a little trouble, then you may want to try some new ways of connecting with their energy. I have a few tips to help you get started…
#1 – Get Back to Basics:
Sometimes when we’ve been working with our stones for a while we forget that we need to keep practicing even the basic techniques for working with them. If you’re feeling disconnected from your crystals or if you’re having a hard time sensing their energy, try some basic hand-sensitivity exercises with them. My favorite is to hold a Quartz point in your right hand and point the termination toward your left palm (about an inch away) and then make small, slow circles in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. Can you sense the energy of the crystal in your left palm? Then reverse hands, holding the Quartz point in your left hand and pointing the termination toward your right palm to repeat the exercise. Doing this a few times per day can help you enhance your ability to sense subtle energy.
#2 – Keep Your Crystals Top of Mind:
I’ve often found in my personal crystal journey that I feel most disconnected from my stones when I’m not actively engaging my senses with them. So there may be more to connecting with your crystals and sensing their energy than just holding them or working with them with your hands. Try keeping them front and center in your space. When you can see them or feel their energy around you by having them in your space, you keep this desire to connect top of mind. You’re much more likely to work with your crystals regularly when they’re readily available than if they’re tucked away in storage.
But there’s a second meaning to “top of mind” here. Many years ago there was an amazing Tarot Reader who worked out of my shop, Mimosa Books in Madison, Wisconsin. She told me that she always found it challenging to feel her crystals in her hand, but if she held them atop her head she could tune right in! If you find that you have trouble sensing crystal energy with your hands, you might want to give this a try. Sometimes switching things up makes all the difference. Remember, we all have different intuitive gifts, so it makes sense that some methods for sensing energy will come more naturally, or be more challenging, for us depending on how we experience and interpret the energy around us.
#3 – Sleep on It:
If you’re having trouble connecting with your stones in your day-to-day life, it could be that your conscious mind is feeling a little bit cluttered or unfocused so tuning into the specific energy of your stone feels challenging. You can switch things up a bit by letting your subconscious step in to help. Before you go to bed at night, hold the stone you’d like to connect with in your hands, over your heart, or above your head for a few moments. Focus as much as you can on the desire to tune into its energy. Then tuck the stone into your pillowcase or set it on your bedside table. As you drift off to sleep, do your best to keep your mind focused on the intention to connect with your stone. When you awake, try to remember to be as still as possible and think about any dreams you may have had and what messages those may bring from your crystal companion.
Alternatively, when you’re in this liminal state just waking from the dream world, think about your stone and how you’re feeling. Where do you feel its energy in your body? How are you feeling emotionally? In what ways are you able to pick up on the subtle energy of your crystal? When you feel ready, reach for your stone and once again hold it in your hands, over your heart, or above your head. If you have a few minutes, jot down any thoughts or feelings about this crystal in a journal.
The most important thing you can do to make any of these exercises more successful is to give it some time. Try working with the same stone for at least two weeks and see what insights you’re able to gather. When it comes to sensing crystal energy, it’s easy to expect that you might be able to just pick up your crystals and instantly feel their energy. In fact, that’s often the way we see others describing their experiences online.
But in reality, tapping into crystal healing energy looks and feels different for everyone.

Wow! This has happened to me a number of times since I started working with crystals. The most recent was just before I became part of the CCH program here at LOVE AND Light. It was so darn scary. I wanted to be a healer more than anything then BAMN I lost all ability to connect with any of my stones. Yes my family life was in turmoil, no I was not taking care of myself, yes I needed to take a step back.
