The health benefits of Himalayan Salt are hotly debated, but no definitive scientific evidence has been found to support the claims that items like Salt Lamps or Spa Salt Caves have any proven effect on wellness.

The staff at my new age shop, Mimosa Books & Gifts, had this to share:

Himalayan Salt (also called Tibetan salt)  is a fossilized sea salt that formed from marine deposits over 250 million years ago. In its most prized form, this salt is hand-mined and unrefined, and still contains some remnants of ancient sea life. This pink salt is mostly sold on the gourmet and health food markets, valued for the trace minerals that give it that rosy color. Most of the pink salt we see comes from the Himalayan foothills in Pakistan. Himalayan salt has a tradition of metaphysical use as well, though it’s all either very general or recent. All salts are used in purification, and many people like to use the Himalayan kind as a bath salt or massage stone.

Salts are protective, too, with different types varying in their “specialty.” Himalayan pink salt is especially suitable for protecting the home and family. Beyond these basic properties, though, there’s little tradition of using this salt in its region of origin. In Tibet and India, it is black salt that has a long tradition in medicine, as everything from an ingredient in healing yak butter tea to a component of Ayurvedic medicine.

Some Tibetan black salt looks dark red, but it is volcanic in origin, and so has a different range of trace minerals than the lighter salt. Of course, we can enjoy using pink salt for protection, massage, in lamps and candle holders, and in small amounts on food. But when most of the properties associated with something are very recent, it’s a good idea to take what you hear with a grain of — sorry — salt. Some excessive and far-fetched claims have been made about this product.

Metaphysical Uses of Himalayan Salt:

Use for general cleansing and purification, peace and calming, and goodwill. This mineral combines the energies of the sun, the earth, the stars, and the primordial sea.

About Himalayan Salt Lamps:

Himalayan Salt Lamps use an ancient form of salt and are said to protect against positive ions in our indoor spaces (from electronic devices). Positive ions have been associated with low energy levels and depression in humans.

The idea behind using salt lamps to combat these ions is that the salt attracts moisture, which the warm bulb or candle inside transforms into negative ions that neutralize the positive (unhealthy) ones. But some basic research has us concluding that most credible sources agree that salt lamps don’t actually release a large enough number of negative ions to make this claim plausible. However, the warm colors and natural glow of the lamps can be a natural mood enhancer.

Here’s something which is scientific and actually does work. Salt is hygroscopic which means it attracts moisture from the atmosphere. Attached to the droplets of water are dust particles which themselves contain bacteria and viruses. The salt kills these things on contact, and the heat of the heat source releases the moisture back into the atmosphere without the airborne pathogens.

I have had a salt lamp in the bedroom for years. I haven’t experienced the healing claims of it but I love it’s warm light to sooth and calm after a day of blue light/computer etc. I do believe in their healing in a bath though. Using it in combination with Epsom salt really kicks things up a notch! Very refreshing energetically and more like being at the beach for a fresh reset and cleanse!

I have been skeptical of salt lamps simply because the salt crystal is coated to keep it from attracting water from the air and melting. If there is no contact with the air, then there is no release of ions. If there is contact, it will melt. (I found this out the hard way, with an incompletely sealed crystal that, yes, melted.)

However, if you’ve been following the new research about near-infrared light (NIR) you will use a salt lamp just for that and be grateful!

I have been using this Himalayan salt lamps for years and during the winter I keep them on most of the time, they help a lot with sinus and allergies and also with depression. I absolutely love them and truly believe they work. Every time anyone enters my living room where I have my big one, they say how nice it feels and how refreshing the air is in that particular spot.

I know a lot of people use the pink himalayan salt for bath salts, could you use the black salt in the same way? Thanks for all your amazing information! <3

I think one of the craziest things I did in Tucson was buy a Himalayan Salt Lamp! First, they are easily obtained everywhere…it was so heavy to carry around, ship or carry on plane…and there were so many other things to buy there! BUT, it was big (10″ tall and 18″ around the bottom)…it was in a cool natural “pyramid” shape…and it was $8.00!!! I don’t expect them to work miracles in my home. They are just pretty and I love the ambient glow. Anything more is just a bonus! Discovering that Hemimorphite is their companion stone is incredible. Hemimorphite is my very personal special stone and I have quite a collection of them including a stunning freeform I got in Tucson so now I’m inspired to create a display/home for them to share together!!! Thanks again Love & Light School!!!

Thank you for The virtual tour of salt rock. I recently came across a large piece and I’m very grateful to have it in my home. Looking forward I can see good things coming from this beautiful piece of rose quartz stone salt rock. Thanks for the insight. Many blessings.
