Do stones have spirits?

Are crystals alive?

Are they conscious beings?

These are things I used to wonder all the time, but after a decade of intense crystal work, I know the answer…it depends.

I tend to think of crystals as living beings, but there are many who view them as “just rocks” (Ha! JUST rocks…try telling any crystal lover that their favorite sparkly treasure is JUST a rock and see where that gets you!). I have witnessed deep relationships develop between people and their healing stones, and I have seen crystals serve as decor elements for interior design, without as much as a passing thought as to their energy.

I used to teach my students about the Crystal Deva, or the conscious beings found within crystals and stones as one viewpoint on the “aliveness” of crystals. I quickly found that this concept was a bit out there for even some of us new-agey types. It’s difficult to think of an inanimate object as having a consciousness all its own, but nonetheless, my experience has shown me time and time again that there is more to crystals than meets the eye.

“In a crystal we have the clear evidence of the existence of a formative life-principle, and though we cannot understand the life of a crystal it is none the less a living being.” -Nikola Tesla

Talking about crystal consciousness in terms of the crystal’s spirit or inhabitant Deva can be a hard pill to swallow when you’re picturing a small being living inside of the crystal. BUT, if you think about how little we really know about our own consciousness, is it really that different? Just because we don’t understand this other form of consciousness, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

“There is as it were a little man sitting inside the center of the skull and he has a television screen in front of him which gives him all messages from the eyeballs.  He has earphones on and that gives him all messages from the ears.  And he has in front of him a control panel with various dials and buttons and things, which enable him to influence the arms and the legs and to get all sorts of information from the nerve ends. And so, he more or less controls the body…but he isn’t the same as the body.” -Alan Watts

There are even some scientists who are currently debating the idea of living crystals. Experiments using tiny Hematite crystals show that these crystals may indeed respond to input from light and chemical compounds, displaying both metabolism and mobility [1]. But are crystals alive?

Many ancient peoples believed in the “stone spirits” and relied on them for healing, guidance, and protection. Crystal Devas were thought to be a manifestation of universal healing energy and acted as the bridge between human consciousness and crystals which allow us to receive information and healing energy from the crystal structure. Some modern healers even believe that it is the Crystal Deva that determine the healing properties of each stone.

Awakening, Dedicating, & Blessing Your Crystal:

It is believed by many that in order to connect with the spirit of the crystal, you first need to awaken the elemental (the spirit or Deva within the crystal. You can awaken the crystal spirit by dedicating your stone with love and light for the good of all beings to serve the universal purpose (this can be spoken aloud or done through prayer, ritual, or ceremony). You may even intend that your crystal to be filled with the life force of Spirit or with the Healing energy of the universe. When you do this, you are making a sacred contract with the stone being that you will always use its energy with the highest integrity and purpose. Bless your crystals as an act of love and gratitude as this is an important part of respecting and honoring the crystal Devas. Then, just graciously receive the magnificent gift of energy given off by the crystal.

Attuning to Your Crystal:

By attuning to your crystals, you will enhance your connection to the stone as well as your ability to communicate with the crystal being.

You can attune to your crystal using meditation. Start by finding a quiet place to relax. Then, hold your crystal in your hands and focus on slow, even breathing. Focus your conscious attention on this crystal and state your intention to become attuned to the energy of the crystal (by feeling its energy, exchanging its energy with yours, and to get acquainted with the Crystal Deva within the stone). When you intuitively feel that your energy has been attuned to that of the crystal being, you should place the crystal in front of you, open your eyes, and slowly return to conscious awareness.

Some ancient people believed that when a crystal contained a rainbow inside, it was a sign that the Deva (spirit) within the crystal was ready to make a connection.

Respecting and Honoring Crystal Beings:

It is important to show your gratitude and thanks to a crystal spirits after you have blessed and attuned to the stone. This can be as simple as thanking the stone aloud for its healing gifts, or it may be as elaborate as you like. Project a feeling of love and thanks to the stone being. It’s your intention that is most important during this process, as your connection with the stone being will allow your gratitude to be known to the crystal. Showing your crystals gratitude and respect will enhance their healing abilities as well as making them happy!

Regardless of whether or not you feel your crystal is a living being, showing your respect for these tools of light is the responsibility of all healers and Lightworkers. Crystals have amazing healing abilities and should be honored and thanked for their gifts.

So ARE crystals alive? Do they have spirits? Do Devas live within crystals?

Ultimately whether you think of crystals as living beings or just as having “good energy,” is a matter of how you frame your point of view. So, are crystals alive? The bottom line is that there is something miraculous and healing about the magic of crystals, so no matter what your view, just connecting with these amazing gifts from Mother Earth is the most important thing of all.

“Rocks are not dead.  You see…if you want to put the world down you say, ‘Fundamentally it’s just a lot of geology.  It’s a stupidity.’  On the other hand if you feel warmhearted toward the universe, you put it up instead of putting it down and you say about rocks, ‘They’re conscious, but a really primitive form of consciousness.’  When I [knock on this crystal here it makes a noise] and that response, that noise, is a form of consciousness.  Our consciousness is much more subtle than that.  But when you hit a bell and it rings, and you touch a crystal and it responds, inside itself.  It has a very simple reaction.  It goes jangle inside, whereas we go jangle with all sorts of colors and lights and ideas and thoughts.  It’s more complicated, but both are equally conscious, just in different degrees.  All I’m saying is that minerals are a rudimentary form of consciousness whereas the other people are saying that consciousness is a complicated form of minerals.”  -Alan Watts
