One simple way to connect with the energy of the moon is to create your own crystal-charged moon water! The moon, being our nearest celestial body, has such a deep impact on us.

The power of the moon and its long history of connection to magic and mystery and connecting with its energy can help you live in alignment and flow with natural cycles.

By preparing this crystal Moon Water essence, you can capture its energy in water to create a sacred essence that you can use for cleansing, ritual, and more! You can even take your moon water to the next level with flower essences or essential oils to create a special mist for your sacred space (more about that later).

To create your crystal moon water you’ll need just a few supplies that you likely already have around the house:

• A Crystal of your choice (one that connects with lunar energy is best!)
• A small glass container
• A medium glass container
• A jar or water bottle with a lid
• Some water (spring or distilled is best, but tap water works in a pinch)

Creating crystal moon water is a very magical way to work with your stones and the energy of the moon. The concept behind a traditional gem water or crystal essence is that the energetic imprint of the crystal is captured by the water (similar to a flower essence). A traditional gem water or crystal essence uses just the energy of the stone to enhance the water, but in this magical adaptation, we’ll also be incorporating the energy of the moon!

When used, your energy body takes on the energy from the imprinted water and the qualities of the stone and the moon phase are absorbed into your field. For this reason, you’ll want to check a lunar calendar and choose an evening to create your crystal moon water when the moon is in the phase most related to your magical intentions. I’ve shared some common correspondences for each moon phase at the end of this article, but you may also want to check out my book, Cosmic Crystals: Rituals and Meditations for Connecting with Lunar Energy, for even more information about working with crystals and the moon.

• How do you want to feel or what do you want your life to be like once you’ve been able to deepen your connection to lunar energy?

Hold these thoughts in your mind and visualize the energy from the moon, down into your crystal, and then into your energy field, surrounding you, and connecting you with the moon.

When you feel ready, bring your arms down to your sides and place the stone in front of you.

Set your larger glass container (be sure all containers are recently washed in hot, soapy water or sanitized in the dishwasher) on a level surface near a window. Then, place your smaller glass container inside of the larger container (off to one side works better than directly in the center). Next, place your lunar crystal inside of the small container. Slowly pour your spring or distilled water into the larger container, so it surrounds the smaller container, making sure that there’s no water in the smaller container. Your crystal should never make contact with the water. This is called the indirect method of preparation of a gem essence or elixir since the water is charged by the energy of the stone without the stone making direct contact with the water. This method is much safer than immersing your stone in the water and it is the only method of essence and elixir preparation I recommend (it’s also important to note here that you should never use radioactive stones in crystal healing or in elixir preparation).

In a traditional gem water or crystal essence, you’d allow the water to sit for anywhere from 2-24 hours. But since we really want to add a little lunar magic, we’re going to allow this essence to charge in the moonlight overnight. Place the containers near a window, or in a spot where they’ll have access to the moon’s energy. The water does not need to be in direct moonlight for it to be charged up with lunar energy, but if you do have a spot where this is possible, go for it! If you’re creating your crystal moon water on the evening of the dark moon there won’t be any light (and that’s ok – you want to create your moon water under the moon phase that’s most aligned with your magical intention or purpose – I’ve included more about that below).

You may also want to cover your containers to prevent any unwanted dust or debris from getting into your water.
Allow your crystal-infused moon water to charge up under the moonlight until the next morning. When you wake up in the morning, gently remove the smaller glass container with your moon crystal from the larger glass container with the water. Pour the energy-infused water into a clean (again – that means it should be recently washed in hot, soapy water or sanitized in the dishwasher) glass container with a tight-fitting lid and store it in the refrigerator. You can keep this lunar-charged crystal water in the refrigerator for up to three days.

If you’d like your crystal moon water to last longer, add a preservative (only use grain alcohol – food-grade alcohol that is at least 90% alcohol / 180 proof) in a 1:1 ratio of alcohol to your crystal moon water. This means that your finished moon water for storage will be 50% alcohol and 50% water. So, if you have 2 ounces of energy-infused water, measure out 2 ounces of alcohol for the finished, preserved water. It is imperative for safety that you add the correct type and quantity of alcohol for preserving your crystal-charged moon water for longer than 3 days. Be sure to keep the preserved water (containing the alcohol) out of reach of children and pets. Store your bottled, preserved moon water in the refrigerator for up to 30 days. Be sure to label it with the date you bottled it so you know when it has reached the end of its shelf-life. If you see any signs of microbial growth before 30 days, discard the bottle with its contents and do not use it.

You can add some of this crystal moon water to a ritual bath, use it for magical ritual or ceremony, or you can even create a vibrational spray to use in your sacred space.

If creating your own vibrational spray, you’ll need a small, dark-colored, glass spray bottle. Just fill the bottle with your preserved moon water. You can customize this spray with your favorite flower essences or essential oils (just be sure they still correspond to your intention and purpose AND be sure not to use anything you may be allergic to). Then, label your spray bottle with the purpose or intention for your spray, the ingredients (like essential oils or flower essences) you used, and the date you bottled it. Store your spray in a cool dark place and enjoy it for up to 30 days. If you see any signs of microbial growth before 30 days, discard the bottle with its contents and do not use it.
